5 Breathing Techniques to Calm Your Mind in Under 5 Minutes

Your breath is the most powerful tool you already have. It is always with you, always available, and completely free. Here are five breathing techniques that can calm your nervous system in five minutes or less.

1. Box Breathing (4-4-4-4)

Used by Navy SEALs and mindfulness practitioners alike, box breathing is the gold standard for rapid calm. Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Repeat for 2-3 minutes.

2. 4-7-8 Breathing

Inhale through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 7 counts, exhale through your mouth for 8 counts. The extended exhale activates your parasympathetic nervous system.

3. Alternate Nostril Breathing (Nadi Shodhana)

Close your right nostril with your thumb, inhale through the left for 4 counts. Close your left nostril with your ring finger, exhale through the right for 4 counts. Inhale right, close, exhale left. This balances the left and right hemispheres of your brain.

4. 5-5 Breathing (Equal Breathing)

Simple but powerful. Inhale for 5 counts, exhale for 5 counts. Use a meditation mala to keep count — moving one bead per inhale-exhale cycle creates a powerful mind-body connection.

5. Diaphragmatic Breathing (Belly Breathing)

Place one hand on your belly. Inhale deeply, letting your belly expand like a balloon. Exhale slowly, feeling it fall. This engages your diaphragm fully and triggers a relaxation response.

Pro tip: Holding a set of grounding beads while practicing these techniques amplifies the calming effect.
